The Red & Green That Closed the Year

Stakes were high on a sunny December morning at Riviera Golf and Country Club as golfers gathered for the Red and Green edition of Upsilonians na Pumapalo. More than one hundred players from the UP Alumni Association, UP Barkada, and the Upsilon Sigma Phi went stroke for stroke in the last of thirteen tournaments hosted this year by the fellowship under Chairman Cary Calimlim ’93.
The Langer Course at Riviera was the perfect battleground. A championship layout measuring over 7,000 yards, it demanded accuracy from tee to green. Tight landing areas, sharp elevation changes, and multi-tiered putting surfaces punished careless swings and rewarded disciplined play. Bogey golfers found it unforgiving; seasoned handicappers treated it as the proving ground they’d been waiting for.

What We’ve Built So Far
The last tournament’s financial report showed just how far the event had come. Total revenue reached P2,374,500.00, with P569,500.00 from tournament fees, P755,000.00 from Vetremedica sponsors, and P1,050,000.00 from Upsilon Sigma Phi alumni and friends.
Expenses amounted to P2,363,689.00, covering green fees, golf carts, insurance, catering, giveaways, trophies, raffle prizes, production, and media coverage. Of that total, P400,000.00 went to the Philippine Eagle Foundation, and P200,000.00 to Wounded Soldiers in Battle.
After factoring in the P1,039,189.00 Vetremedica subsidy, the tournament closed with a P1,050,000.00 net income. The turnout — 122 players — showed the project’s staying power and its potential to grow even further.

The Raffle Everyone Waited For
Once players settled into lunch, the atmosphere shifted from competitive to festive. Whiskey circulated, stories were swapped across tables, and minor raffle prizes were called even before the formal program began. Soundbar units went to Wilfred Teves, Gigoy Tayao, Vino Edwards, and Jeff Coronel. 43-inch LED TVs went to Alfred Vargas, Rogie Concepcion, and ℅ Raul Paras. 55-inch TVs went to ℅ Philip Alpajora and Isiah Cadiz, while the 65-inch LED TV went to Fredrinand Gregorio.
Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for. Ticket 0042 was drawn, and Jerenel Hipolito claimed the BYD SEAL DM-i Dynamic, the largest raffle prize ever given in the history of Upsilonians na Pumapalo.

Acknowledging the Sponsors
The day was also supported by a full roster of hole sponsors who helped carry the operational load that makes Pumapalo possible. Hole 1 was backed by Javi Flores ’89 and The Law Offices of Flores and Ofrin; Hole 2 by Blamar Gonzales ’66; Hole 3 by Radio Wealth Finance and PABLAW; Hole 4 by JC Premier; Hole 5 by Allado Construction and Shinra FaunaTech; Hole 6 by Leads Agri and Talentium; Hole 7 by Lorins.
Hole 8 was sponsored by Parikit; Hole 9 by Asialink, JIL Cargo, McCormick, and CBAS; Hole 10 by Joey Tan ’93, Batch 98, and Batch 77; Hole 11 by MGB Agrivet and JEMCY; Hole 12 by 3 Strokes and Vetremedica Corporation; Hole 13 by Araneta City and Vitarich; Hole 14 by Master Siomai and Amber Builders; Hole 15 by USP Batch 1986 and MorePower; Hole 16 by Whoopy and GP Equipaje; Hole 17 by K&G; and Hole 18 by Batch 83 and Batch 88.
The support kept the tournament running smoothly and ensured that proceeds flowed directly to UMAP and to the event’s beneficiaries.
Giving Back
True to its purpose, Pumapalo continued its work as a fundraiser. This edition donated P100,000 to the I Will Serve Foundation, with ongoing support across the year directed to UMAP, Wounded Soldiers in Battle, and the Philippine Eagle Foundation.
A Fitting End to the Season
The Red and Green Tournament closed the Pumapalo calendar with exactly the blend of competition, camaraderie, and service that has defined the fellowship from the beginning. Riviera delivered the challenge; the players brought the spirit; and the raffle delivered the finale.
Someone drove home in a new BYD SEAL DM-i Dynamic — but the bigger win belonged to UMAP and to the causes that keep the fraternity’s commitment to service alive. Hooray for the Upsilonians na Pumapalo.
