Upsilon Sigma Phi Turns Over the UP Promenade to the University

The Upsilon Sigma Phi Alumni Association, Inc. (USPAAI) formally turned over the UP Promenade to the University of the Philippines on November 19, 2025, during ceremonies held at the landscaped walkway. The event was part of the fraternity’s 107th anniversary.
Atty. Eric Pilapil ’86, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Atty. Gerry Sirios ’89, President, signed the Deed of Donation on behalf of USPAAI. UP Diliman Chancellor Atty. Carlo Vistan ’94 signed for the University.
The Promenade was originally built in front of Gonzalez Hall, the University Library, in time for the Upsilon’s centennial in 2018. It spans 115 meters in length and 7.5 meters in width, widening to about 16 meters at certain portions. Designed for students, faculty, and staff, the space includes internet- and WiFi-capable facilities and has become one of the campus’s most used public areas.

Ahead of the turnover, USPAAI worked with the UP administration to carry out repairs and improvements. These included cleaning and resurfacing the benches, repairing the lighting, installing new security cameras, and upgrading WiFi capability to support students who use the area for study, meetings, and online work.

Residents, led by Illustrious Fellow Gelo Dellosa ’18, donated ₱50,000 to the UP Office of Scholarships and Grants for the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs’ Adopt-an-Iskolar Program. USPAAI matched the contribution with another ₱50,000, raising the initial scholarship fund to ₱100,000. “Our celebration today comes full circle because the fraternity and UP community are together,” Dellosa said.
Pilapil emphasized that the Promenade was built as a sanctuary for students. “This is why the USPAAI collaborated with the UP administration to clean the benches, repair the lights, and install cameras and WiFi,” he said.
Sirios noted that the space offered students a place to learn outside the classroom: “This event shows that we can do something good for our community and the country.”
Chancellor Vistan, former dean of the UP College of Law, acknowledged the significance of the donation. “This is a meaningful gesture that affirms what can be achieved when our alumni and students come together with a clear sense of purpose,” he said.

After the signing, the celebration continued with food, drinks, and music. Alumni and residents spent the evening on the Promenade, sharing stories and reconnecting. The gathering underscored the purpose of the space: a place on campus where fellowship, community, and service intersect.
